Methodology — Athletic Performance Score

How five pillars become one number.

The Athletic Performance Score blends five distinct physical qualities into a single 0–100 number, so a coach gets one figure that actually reflects a rounded athletic profile — not just how fast someone is in a straight line.

Five pillars, not one number in disguise

APS is built from five pillars — Speed, Power, Strength, Aerobic Endurance, and Anaerobic Endurance — each scored on its own, then weighted and summed into the final number. A player who's explosive but fades late in a match will show a different pillar breakdown than one who's steady but never quite the fastest on the field, even if their overall APS scores land close to each other.

The weighting isn't the same for everyone: it defaults to Speed 30% / Power 20% / Strength 10% / Aerobic Endurance 15% / Anaerobic Endurance 25%, but a sport — and a position group within it, like a Rugby forward versus a back — can be configured with its own weighting instead, so a score actually reflects what matters for that sport and role, not one generic blend applied everywhere.

Benchmarked against the right curve

Every pillar is calculated against age- and gender-relative benchmarks, not one flat adult standard applied to everyone on the roster. A 14-year-old and a 22-year-old are never compared on the same curve — which is what makes the score portable: an APS of 70 means roughly the same thing for any player it's calculated for, whoever they are.

Why one number, in the end

Coaches don't always have time to hold five separate pillar scores in their head for thirty players. Rolling them into one Athletic Performance Score gives a fast, trustworthy read on where a player stands overall — while the pillar breakdown underneath is still there the moment anyone needs to dig into why.
